I CHALLENGE MYSELF- 2007 YOUTH CENTURY RIDE

On Saturday, June 9, 2007 a group of our students from the George Washington Educational Campus (GWEC) and the South Bronx Campus High Schools participated in I Challenge Myself’s (ICM) third Century Ride -- a100-miles, one-day bike ride. The young riders started their ride from their respective destinations in Washington Heights and the South Bronx at approximately 6:00 a.m. and met at the West Side Highway bike trail on 125th Street to continue their 100-miles journey. The ride led students, 2 cycling coaches and 3 volunteers, across the Brooklyn Bridge, through Queens to Long Beach, Long Island and back to Washington Heights. Riders arrived at the GWEC athletic at 6:30 p.m. where they were greeted by friends and family for finish line celebration. The Century Ride is a powerful and memorable culminating event for these dedicated youth you have been training since February. The Ride and training not only help students be more physically active and develop self efficacy; it also helps to highlight the efforts young people are undertaking to combat the growing obesity epidemic in their own lives and in their communities.
