I CHALLENGE MYSELF

Mission
I Challenge Myself (ICM) challenges and supports youth from underserved communities of New York City to become physically active healthy adults and skilled active citizens and leaders. By using non traditional sports and service learning to bolster youths’ attachment to school and improve their perception of themselves and what they can accomplish, ICM believes that high school students will develop the behaviors, knowledge, skills and experiences needed to achieve personal, academic and professional success.

Our Programs

Cycling Smarts
The Cycling Smarts class is an interdisciplinary Physical Education (PE) cycling class that incorporates select science and math skills and concepts to help students make connections between what they are learning in their academic classes to their physical education experience. The class is offered to students at the George Washington Educational Campus during the last period of the day and after school. The class meets five days a week: four days are devoted to PE and the fifth day focuses on math or science. (Learn more about our Cycling Smarts program!)

Urban Youth Health Ambassadors (Health Ambassadors)
The Health Ambassadors program emphasizes the importance of community service with a focus on youths’ personal health and health issues affecting their community. Youth receive training that helps them learn about a specific health issue impacting their community and provide support to help them plan and execute service learning health projects in the South Bronx and Washington Heights. While developing and implementing these projects, youth will authentically apply important organizational, problem solving, and leadership skills and develop an appreciation for social responsibility. The program also includes a career exploration component. The Health Ambassadors program meets every Friday at the Fort Washington Collegiate Church in Washington Heights.

Volunteer Opportunities at ICM

ICM seeks 2-3 volunteer cycling coaches to accompany Cycling Smarts students and the two lead cycling coaches on  their Sunday training rides.  Volunteers should be experienced cyclists who can commit 3-4 Sundays starting in April through the June 7, 2008 Bear Mountain Century Ride.

Rides start at the George Washington Educational Campus in Washington Heights and generally take students across the GWB and various destinations via 9W.  The rides are designed to increase in distance each week in order to prepare students to safely and successfully complete their first Century Ride.

ICM also needs an experienced cyclist(s) to help organize the Bear Mountain Century Ride.  Specifically, we are looking for someone to prepare the Bear Mountain cue sheet and identify rest stops.  ICM will rent a van to serve as the SAG vehicle and work with the Century Ride volunteer coordinator with all the logistics of this exciting ride.

If you are interested in supporting the next generation of cyclists and leaders, please complete the Volunteer Cycling Coach application and email to Ana Reyes at anar@ichallengemyself.org or via mail to: I Challenge Myself, 201 St. Ann's Avenue, Bronx, NY 10454.  Once your application is received, we will call you to set up an interview.

Please feel free to contact Ana at (718) 585-5021 if you need additional information.
