Our Programs

Currently I Challenge Myself provides three sports-based youth development programs at New York City public high schools: Cycling Smarts, College Bike Tour and 4toFIT.

What makes our programs unique are the end of semester fitness challenges that are designed to promote effortful control, team work and test students' physical and mental endurance. Each challenge event recognizes and celebrates students' perseverance, accomplishments and personal growth. While each program has specific activities, they all use the following core activities:

Goal setting • Team building • Self-reflection • Nutrition education

cycling smarts

Cycling Smarts is a sports-based youth development program that takes high school physical education out of the gym and onto the streets of New York City! Our classes in the Lower East Side, Washington Heights, and the South Bronx offer students the opportunity to ride throughout all 5 boroughs, maintain their bike, gain cycling skills, develop their strength and endurance, set goals, and grow their knowledge of nutrition and physiology. Every semester ends with a culminating challenge that all Cycling Smarts students take part in together.

College bike tour

The College Bike Tour program is designed to provide 10 current Cycling Smarts students the opportunity to follow the I Challenge Myself Century Ride with an even greater challenge: a 400-mile 7-day New York State college bike tour that exposes students 7 very different colleges. The goal of the Tour is to further challenge our students to aspire, focus and prepare for college and life after high school.

4toFIT provides structure, skills building, variety, fitness challenges and fun to high school physical education (PE) classes that help students become more physically active in class and build physical and mental resilience in life.  Sports management education  units, including trips to sports related businesses help expose  students to non-athletic sports careers and the education needed to pursue these careers.   Students train for 4 fitness challenges: a 5k run, strength and two cardio circuits, which coincide with the end of each program phase: Control, Movement, Strength and Power.  4toFIT juniors and seniors also have the opportunity to apply to participate in ICM Sports Management  Mentorship Program.

Our Partnership Model

We are building our capacity to expand to additional public high schools in New York City and to serve middle school students. Longer term we hope to partner with schools outside of NYC.

Provide schools with a fleet of bicycles and related safety supplies, fitness equipment, storage equipment and assist with bike maintenance costs. The bikes remain at the school for students to use with their coaches/teachers on organized rides.

Provide teachers/coaches with curricula, onsite training and support.

For the Cycling Smarts program, ICM contracts teachers from each school to run the class at their school for programming that takes place out of school time.  This allows for cost sharing between ICM and the schools and also allows the schools to take ownership of the program.
